Year 5 and 6 have had a jam-packed Spring Term filled with exciting opportunities, memorable experiences and fantastic learning.
One of the highlights of the term was the residential trip to Govilon, where the children demonstrated teamwork, resilience and independence while taking part in a range of adventurous activities. Also, earlier in the term, all of Year 5 and 6 had the incredible opportunity to experience indoor skydiving. A huge thank you to Mr Umney for organising this unforgettable experience. Both of these events are sure to remain core memories for many years to come!
The children have also enjoyed a fascinating visit from the Explorer Academy, where they learned from an expert with first-hand experience of the rainforest. This complemented our Amazon topic perfectly. Throughout the unit, the children explored the diverse animals and plants of the Amazon, learned about indigenous communities and investigated the causes and impacts of deforestation, as well as what can be done to protect this vital ecosystem. They proudly shared their knowledge with the rest of the school, becoming courageous advocates for environmental protection.
Year 6 approached their SATs with determination, perseverance and a positive attitude. They enjoyed a cooked breakfast together each morning before the tests, which was greatly appreciated by all! We are incredibly proud of the hard work, resilience and maturity they demonstrated throughout the week.
In Science, the children took part in several exciting investigations as part of their learning about the properties and changes of materials. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and scientific thinking shone through in every experiment.
It has been a fantastic term and we are extremely proud of all that Year 5 and 6 have achieved 🙂
It has been a very busy Autumn term for Year 5 and 6 and the children have worked incredibly hard.
In English, the children enjoyed reading ‘Pig Heart Boy’ by Malorie Blackman. The children were able to explore in detail the main characters and they produced a detailed diary entry as well as written a formal persuasion letter.
During the second half of the Autumn term, the children learnt about Oliver Twist and as a result they have been able to produce further detailed writing pieces including suspense.
In Maths, both year groups have worked hard with building up their number skills including place value, the four operations and fractions. They have also been developing their reasoning and problem-solving skills through the use of Gareth Metcalfe resources.
In History, the children have been learning about crime and punishment across the eras from Anglo- Saxons to present day. The children have particularly enjoyed researching significant people including Robin Hood, Henry VIII, Guy Fawkes and Robert Peel and how they have influenced how crimes and punishment have been managed over time. As part of this unit of work the children visited the National Justice Museum, in Nottingham. The children had the opportunity to interact with a range of historical artefacts as well as engage with the interactive displays and actors finding out about how crime and punishment took place in the Georgian and Victorian era. During the afternoon they experienced taking part in a mock trial with everyone having key parts to play.
In Science, the children have learnt about Forces and Light. The children have actively engaged with practical activities and liked finding about Scientists related to the work cover, this included George Cayley, the father of flight.
