We teach RE using The Diocese of Peterborough Syllabus (revised in 2024-2029) and Understanding Christianity. 50% of our teaching time is dedicated to teaching concepts within Christianity (although these sometimes link to other faiths) and pupils learn for at least 1 hour a week

During the Spring term, Reception and Year 1 have been exploring about being special. They have reflected upon what makes them special and how it is important to belong. They have looked at symbols and logos of groups they belong to, including football teams and Beavers as well as learning about symbols linked to Christianity and other religions.

During our lessons, the children have also considered why Christians believe children are special to God. They understand that there can be many different versions of the Bible including children’s bibles.

Finally, we have been thinking of places which are special to us and thought about how they make them feel. They also recognised that church is a special place for Christians.

In Year 2, Dragon Class began the Spring term by exploring the BIG question: “Who is a Muslim and how do they live?”

Throughout the unit, pupils learned about key Muslim beliefs, including the importance of the Shahadah, and discovered why this statement of faith is central to the lives of Muslims around the world. They spent time thinking, talking and asking questions about how beliefs influence the way Muslims live, worship and care for others. As part of their learning, the children also explored what a mosque looks like, finding out about the different features inside and what happens there. The children investigated a range of sacred artefacts, which helped them to build understanding, curiosity and respect for the Muslim faith.

In the second part of the Spring term, the focus in Year 2 shifted to the theme of ‘Salvation’, exploring the BIG question: “Why does Easter matter to Christians?”

The children learned that Easter is a central part of the ‘big story’ of the Bible. They listened to stories from Holy Week and Easter, beginning to understand the idea of Salvation and how Christians believe that Jesus rescues and cares for people. During a visit to St. Leonard’s, the children also learned that Christians believe Jesus rose again, offering hope and the promise of a new life. Through discussion, drama and storytelling, the children deepened their understanding of why Easter is so important to Christians around the world.

During the Spring Term, Year 3 and 4 have been considering the key question "What does it mean to be a Hindu in Britain today?" As part of this, we explored the core elements of the Hindu faith, including how Hindus live their lives, hobbies and interests which are meaningful to Hindus and the significance of Puja worship and the various symbols and artefacts used within it. We enriched this learning with a visit to a local Hindu Mandir, where we got to experience first hand the daily rituals and practices which underpin this faith. We had an excellent guide during our visit, who answered all the questions we had and even allowed us to ring the worship bells. A fantastic visit for us all. We will be continuing our learning on Hinduism in the Summer Term.
