Year 2, Spring Term 2026

Dragon Class has enjoyed a fun-filled and productive spring term, packed with exciting learning experiences across the curriculum. We’ve had so many highlights, including Science Day, rock climbing and our Easter Bonnet Parade!

In Design and Technology, the children loved preparing their own healthy wraps, selecting ingredients carefully to create nutritious and balanced meals. This linked closely with the Science curriculum, where they explored healthy lifestyles and discovered the importance of exercise, diet and keeping our bodies healthy.

In RE, the children focused on learning about Islam. They took part in a range of hands-on activities to help deepen their understanding of Muslim beliefs and traditions, including enjoying a virtual tour of a Mosque. During our Salvation topic, Year 2 explored the Big Question: Why does Easter matter to Christians? The children brought the story of Holy Week to life by enacting the key events leading up to Easter. They also visited St. Leonard's Church to learn how the church community celebrates Easter today and enjoyed discovering Easter traditions from around the world.

As part of their Geography work, the children explored maps of the local area and learned to identify human and physical features around Rothwell. They also visited Rothwell to test out their navigational skills! Despite the wet and windy weather, the children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to explore outside the classroom together. To finish the topic, they created their own maps of Rothwell, helping to further develop their mapping and geographical skills.

It has been a wonderful term full of enthusiasm, curiosity, and achievement, and we are incredibly proud of all that Year 2 have accomplished.

Throughout the Autumn term, the children in Year 2 have been full of energy and curiosity! They have shown great enthusiasm across the entire curriculum, embracing each new topic with excitement. Here are a few highlights…

The year began with a fascinating History topic: the Great Fire of London. The children discovered what life was like in London in 1666. They were especially intrigued by Samuel Pepys and his diary, with its eyewitness account of the events (written in a top-secret code!) We then moved onto our Geography topic, The World. The children are now confident in naming and locating the continents and oceans, having improved their atlas skills along the way. It is wonderful to see how they proudly demonstrate their knowledge — geographers in the making!

In Science, the children took part in a range of investigations to explore the properties of materials, including testing which materials were waterproof and considering the materials most suitable for different purposes. A standout science moment was our visit to Twycross Zoo, which brought our learning about living things and their habitats to life. The children loved observing animals up close and making links between habitats and adaptations.

One of our favourite activities is Reading Buddies, which takes place in our English sessions. We all love reading to our special buddy from Griffin class – they are fantastic role-models for reading!

The children also thoroughly enjoyed their Art learning this term, particularly their hands-on project designing and creating a clay relief tile. Inspired by houses and the work of sculptor Rachel Whiteread, they showed fantastic creativity and concentration, taking great pride in their finished pieces.

The children have settled into Year 2 wonderfully and I am extremely proud of everything they have accomplished this term. I am excited to see this develop as they build on all they have learned during the spring. Well done, Dragons!
